Augh!

I wrote my evening post about things we take on faith and things we take by hearsay and the many literary associations we bring to everything we see and do. I told my little story about dominos, nightmares, leprechauns, card casinos, bocce, hedge apples, possessed cinematic boy dolls, dreams, and a city park near Olympic or Pico in Los Angeles. I even managed to edit it down so that I would not have to burden people with either a long post or the lj cutting thing. I hit that cool button that says "update journal", but instead of the reassurance that my post had been entered, I got the IE notation that the website could not be contacted. In the past, this has happened, and repeated posting just makes for duplicate posts. I hit the "recent" key to see if it had posted notwithstanding the error flag. It had not posted, so I tried to go back to the journal update. Sadly, though the "update journal" was now blank. Now the post is lost. It's no great denial to posterity--it just started with a set of one dollar dominos and went downhill from there. But I placed just the tiniest slice of my soul into that post, and now it's gone. I feel just like the boy in the cartoon when the kite gets hung in the tree.

that's a bummer. For long entries, or long replies, I usually write things up in the word processor and then copy and paste into the lj client just in case this sort of thing happens. Also, if I'm making a long reply (comment) I hit the 'select all' then 'copy' in the browser before I go to 'preview' or 'post comment'. That way, if it stuffs up, then you can always just paste it back in again.

I know how it feels. We've all done it :)

Thanks for the sage advice and kind words. It's funny--I've lost lots of posts before, but this one I kinda liked. You are dead on right about the MS Word, although I tend to get lazy and use the wicked AOL half-browser, which is particularly resistant to cut and paste. It's pure laziness! I could easily minimize AOL and go in through IC or Netscape, but I just love that low-hassle approach to life! ONly it's not so low when a post erases.

Tonight was like some Faustian bargain, though--hit the update button, signaling "I am content", and old Mephisto pulls out the text! I didn't even get Helen of Troy!

You didn't even get the Trojan Horse!

Your description of the post sounded tantalizing. Maybe parts of it will come back to you in the next few days and you can slip them in.

Cheer up

I am sure it was well-written and insightful, the way your posts always are. So let's pretend it posted and that as usual it made me smile.

What a sweet thing to say. Thank you. Actually, I was thinking about one of your posts just this evening, as I began to formulate the Getty Museum of my heart and soul, to be toured in a future post.

You can even just copy whatever you write in the "Message" box, just in case

Dontcha hate when that happens?

I know how you feel; I've lost a post or two that I'd put a lot of thought into... It's frustrating.

it's wonderful to read your posts again... sorry for your loss

i can't help thinking tough... if the boy whose kite was stuck in the tree was Native American and you took a picture of him, would he appear in the prints? or was his soul already stolen... maybe he'd be just slightly transparent....
