Greg and I met when we went to the same high school, some 36 years ago. We became friends in college. He became a physics Ph.D. and I became a lawyer. Our lives took different paths in different cities. His kids are older now than we were when we met.

We had dinner tonight, though, at Soul Man's Barbecue in Greenville, and for all the vagaries of age and idea, it's great that he's still entirely him, and I'm still entirely me, and we'd never mistake anything about that.

I spent a pleasant half an hour on twitter talking with a kind soul about the odd band Sparks. The discussion makes me want to write tinkertoy tunes with terrific titles.

I remember Sparks--I have one of their albums in a box somewhere. I remember the keyboard player, and how he would stare at the camera in early music videos.

I was a big fan at 14, and like a lot of that material still at 52. They had a couple of years of British chart-topping fame, though the fan base from those years were kids fixated on the outward oddities, when the songs themselves were more odd and more fun.

It always makes to happy to read about men holding on to friendships. Seems to me woman are naturally born to that, and a lot of men have a hard time bonding over things other than sports or politics. Am I being short sighted/

I'm not sure if you're short-sighted. For me, my friendships with other guys often last decades.
