Tonight I attended the May Garland Bar meeting. The speaker was a sitting immigration judge. I found the talk fascinating--the length of time to get a proceeding to trial turned out to be, as I expected, large. I learned that though the huge influx of children abated a bit, it is still a phenomenon. The time from initial citation through resolution of the final appeal can be four years. I liked the judge, a former policeman and state court judge, who imparted lots of interesting information. A lot of kids grow up in situations that anyone would want to leave and yet the law does not recognize many of those situations as asylum-worthy.
