I'm reading tonight about Quercus Havardii--the Havard oak. It grows to about 4 feet tall, and it occurs in sand dunes in west Texas. You can look across the horizon and see these little oak trees, not realizing that you're not looking at isolated bushes in sand, but instead at a huge forest stretching across a sandy horizon.
Havard oak roots stabilize the sand. They survive where other things do not survive. I worry, sometimes, that folks get too concerned with being a giant sequoia--when it's entirely noble to be a havard oak, thriving in sand.
