May. 6th, 2003 06:23 pmI imagine my life as punctuation. What symbol would I be? I am anything but an exclamation mark, though I like the sense of urgency--the feel of right now. Ditto marks don't become me, nor am I a matter of dashes, splitting phrases (and sometimes infinitives). I'm pretty sure I'm a comma, in mid-stream, but sometimes I wonder if my particular sentence has not already had its period, and I'm just working in the space after the paragraph ends. My law firm's name is comprised of two surnames, set apart by a Texas star. I am far too Arkansan to be taken quite in by this Texas bravado, but there is something appealing about being set off with a star.

The words on either side of you must be complete clauses unto themselves, with subject and predicate, and must thus be carefully and meticulously arranged.
However, those clauses, arranged just so, and offset by you, often yield surprising and illuminating results, especially in the form of a roomy paradox, or unexpected juxtaposition.

Date: 2003-05-06 04:20 pm (UTC)no, really, i like that concept. in grade school, our teacher taught us punctuation by drawing each one as a character/person:
the quotation twins
grandma and grandpa parentheses
daddy comma & mommy period
etc.
i fear these make no sense without the images. perhaps i'll have to draw them and post them on my own lj some time!
