Snowstorm

Saturday the weather proved cold and breezy, but no sleet fell, Perhaps a sprinkle or two of rain fell. I walked very brief walks in Green Park (6 species), Story Park (5 species) and Bethany Lakes Park (10 species). I saw my first Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker, which brings my 2021 count to 56.

Saturday evening we got take-out from Rockfish Grill. I was impressed with their process--order on-line, drive to a curbside pick-up space just outside the restaurant, and voila! a pleasant young women in a mask brought me our food. This is the way lots of places are set up to work, but I appreciated that this instance worked without a hitch.

I woke at 4 a.m. Sunday morning and checked outdoors. The promised sleet did not materialize. By 6 a.m., I saw patches of frozen precipitation on the front yard. By 11 a.m., over an inch of snow was on the ground. As I type this at 5:25 p.m., perhaps 3 inches or so accumulated, and more is on the way, A second, larger snowstorm is predicted for Wednesday.

Our last major accumulation of snow happened in 2015.  Six years is a longish interval between snows (we did have a trace snow or two in between). But now that snow is returning, it seems to be making up for lost time.

Sunday I read another 40 pages of "The Ring of Bright Water." I am enjoying it so far.

I have some work/work and some famlly paperwork/work to accomplish. I expect that I will have to work from home the first three days of this week, but we'll see.  The temperature right now is well below freezing (14 F, , - 10 C). Record lows are predicted. We have our faucets all on to try to avert a plumbing freeze. I remember when I was college or law school age and our pipes burst at our Arkansas home. I remember assisting my father in trying to deal with wrapping pipes to temporize.

Lately I draw images with the open source simple-to-use drawing program Tuxpaint. I figured out that it is easy to create images for frame-by-frame animation with that program.  I animated a picture of a sketchy wild guppy swimming forward for 14 seconds.

We managed to get Beatrice walked each time she needed it today. It is hard to have her go out into such cold weather, even with one of her little jackets on.

I put seed in our feeder yesterday. Today I saw Pine Siskins (still here from the irruption), Dark-Eyed Junco, Northern Cardinals and a Blue Jay.

Except for taking Beatrice outside, I have not been out of the house today.
