Law babes

Yesterday when I went to the mall to get Lenscrafters to once again unravel the odd abstract sculpture I have made of my glasses, the mall sported tons of kiosk ads for that David E. Kelley television show about the three twentysomething gorgeous women who happen to be killer lawyers in killer heels. This show has, by coincidence, just been canceled after two episodes. Maybe the TV viewing world has finally had enough of shows based only on the looks of the cast members and the feeble attempts to push envelopes which none of us are "enveloped" by in our everyday lives. Perhaps it is middle age and a lack of any particular physical charm that makes such shows seem more preternaturally boring than usual to me; it's certainly not a lack of appreciation for "good looks", but it does get boring when everything in life is about looks. Once upon a time the "girl next door" sidekicks were suitably ordinary-looking, but now even the sidekick is someone too attractive to believe. I won't belabor the double standards on age and appearance applied by gender, either, as they are pretty evident to everyone. But let's hope this cancelation is one more sign that "law babes" and "hot docs" and "cops with a great figure" are on the way out. Mr. Kelley has created one of TV's best "non-standard-issue" female characters, in a show that I otherwise find appallingly bad (i.e., "The Practice"). He should know better, and I hope this new show axing is one sign that viewers plan to teach show creators that we want a bit more than the girl from the personal skin care commercials.

That's kinda satisfying innit?
What we need are shows featuring casts consisting of body doubles of Norm and Cliff from Cheers.

Sorry there!

Cameron Manheim is superb! I also like the black guy with the incredibly huge lips. Bobby Donnell is a sanctimonious prick with a sanctimonious whining wife. Jimmy is a dumb dweeb. Rebecca is okay, but can also get up on her all too high horse.

The Law Babes, which I accidentally stumbled upon in one of my weaker moments of having finished every crossword puzzle in the papers and being utterly bored, was thoroughly, offensively and utterly ABOMINABLE! Happy it got cancelled so quickly.

The "law babes" show was so bad I don't even remember what it was called. Law Girls? I don't even remember!

Law Babes is most appropriate.

Random bit of trivia: The term "pushing the envelope" stems from a personal essay by Virginia Woolf regarding life and reality as a semi-translucent envelope in which we are contained.

Thanks for commenting. I didn't know that!

::grin:: Neither did I, until two weeks ago, when we read that essay in class whilst discussing Ms. Woolf's novel To The Lighthouse.

It gives me a neat mental image of being inside one of those odd translucent papery-plastic envelopes that you can sort of see through, but not entirely, and surrounded therein by a bluegreenwhite glow from some light source outside the envelope...

Precisely, and what's so sad is that not only are all these women ostensibly size 2s (or tortured into being 2s), they are nearly all indistinguishable. I can't identify most actresses in their twenties. Very few women go beyond that type, as you say.

Yes, exactly. I have known a few size 2s in life, but since when did a woman have to be size 2 to 4 to be attractive?

I haven't seen the show that you're talking about & don't know the name of it, but I think I know which one you are talking about. And I'm sure it sucked. I rarely watch TV because most shows are complete garbage. But...why would I want to watch a show that reflects real life? Real life is boring and annoying. Reality sucks. I want to see a world filled with hot, young, skinny girls. I want a world that is action packed and where everything gets solved by the end of an episode. I'm tired of reality: filled with unattractive people, where everything is boring, and nothing ever gets resolved. I think TV should reflect the reality we WANT life to be like, not what it is really like. If I wanted to see unattractive people, I could go anywhere and see them. But what fun is that? TV is escapism...a way to forget about the mediocrity of life and escape to a world that is fun and exciting and attractive. I'd rather live in the make believe world that appears on TV than the boring "real" one that we are all forced to live in. TV "reality" seems like it would be a lot more enjoyable to me.

You know, you make a good point in some respects.
I guess that the problem I have is with the gender equity issue. Sipowicz on NYPD Blue is paired with a run of drop dead gorgeous much younger wish-fulfillment actresses. No similar female character
is accorded similar perks.

I also like to think that fantasies can be spun with people with less "classic" looks as well. I like the non=standard-issue looker once in a while, which TV does not deliver often enough.
