When I do business travel, I frequently don't have time to stop and see things. So I must take my pleasures in small, incidental bursts. This morning as we landed in Charleston, WV, the trees are a burst of color just like a picture postcard. Today I drive on down south, and will get to drink in Fall color like a thirsty man drinks water. Last night by coincidence the only interesting book at the SF bookstore was Homer Hickam's Sky of Stone, an absolutely entrancing autobiographical novel, all about the region of the country to which, by chance, I am driving today. It all fits together somehow, even if only in my mind.

I love those moments of synergy. It's as if something/someone/somewhere were telling me "Hey, you're on the right path."

Thanks so much for the comment. I feel that synergy myself. It's one of those "this is why I am a theist" moments for me, but fortunately not one of those evangelical ones :)

Great user pic! I wish I could get to Baltimore, so you could show me AVAM and tell me all the things wrong and right about it! :)

That Day of the Dead card was smashing, by the way, very timely and cool.

CA to WV? Could there be a trip more likely to induce culture-shock?! ;)

The trees ARE beautiful out here right now. I'm glad you're enjoying!

Homer Hickam's books are fabulous: Rocket Boys (made into the movie October Sky), Sky of Stone and The Coalwood Way are all delightful memoirs, quite well told, IMO.

Apparently he's also written fiction: Back to the Moon is listed here (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0613277201/). I haven't read this one... have you?

I loved Sky of Stone. I literally read it in one evening on the plane. What a glorious prelude to a WV trip! I love that part of the country, but it's funny, when I land in our rather more prosaic place of prairie meets farmland with some trees, it seems more beautiful here, because its distinctiveness is so great.

Sonoma County and southern W VA are both wonderful areas, if culturally non-identical!
