I drove Beatrice to the pet lodge today. While my wife and I worked, fellows came and installed dimmers on some of the room lights. No hint arose today as to the estimated time of arrival of the carpets. Perhaps this will arrive tomorrow.

I walked at lunch in Breckinridge Park, where mockingbirds flocked to Summer berries and barn swallows exulted on fence wires. I walked at the end of the day at Oak Point Park, where western kingbirds, scissor-tailed flycatchers and a male American kestrel all hunted insects.

Our current inclination is to go on vacation next month in the western United States.
We are sorting out now which of three scenic wonderlands to visit.

I listened to a great Fedora leader interview on the Linux Action Show today, and
also looked at a cool used computer hardware site pointed out by [personal profile] gracegiver . I also drew a sketch with Inkscape, a program which never makes me a better artist, but does give me enough fun to try, try again.

Report from Northern California

Western United states cover a lot of territory. By Wonderlands I bet you mean Grand Canyon, Bryce and ??

Just in case you were thinking of including California:
I know there are all kinds of vacations, and your idea of what is good might be very, very different from my idea. That said I'm not a fan of early fall in the west. Hot, in a lot of places very smoky from various wildfires that are endemic and worse this year than usual. Vegitation that is often lush and or colourful is non-existent this year. October is a great time to visit San Francisco as we often get some of our best weather then. Still early and mid October days can be in the 100's outside of the coastal envelope. By November the worst of the heat is gone and we should have had some rain, brave spears of green should be poking up, and you can almost feel the sigh of relief as the countryside shakes off the long, hot, dusty, smokey summer. December is a bit dicy, we sometimes get big storms, but often get lovely sunshine too.
Forget January and February and often most of March. It rains and can be pretty challenging then, but beautiful on nice days.

Good advice. Our list is narrowed to:

1. Grand Teton National Park
2. Glacier National Park
3. The Texas panhandle state parks (Palo Duro,
Caprock Canyons, Copper Breaks). We will probably
do the Texas Panhandle, though we've not fully committed.
The Panhandle will be the least crowded and be stark and, like the others, filled with wildlife, but the question is whether it will too hot still when we plan to go.
