In the fading light, a flock of northern cardinals came into the wood. They flitted from tree to tree, sometimes pausing, sometimes wandering. They never rested for long. I would see a flash of red or a flash of reddish-brown. They looked like an adventurous troupe of athletes.
Earlier, I watched a northern mockingbird stand on a tree. As I watched him, he crouched down and lay still. An American kestrel passed by overhead. Things returned to normal.
