Lately I think of times I gave unsolicited advice when I could have just listened or refrained. Sometimes it worked out fine, but a good few times my hope to be helpful led me astray. I like that I can learn from experience, and improve.

perhaps it is a cop out but i give less unsolicited advice than i used to give. i do say what i think, sometimes "argue" a point, but, in the end, i use have tried to stop using words like "you should" or "you need" and just offer my two cents worth to be accepted or dismissed which is fine.

I wish there was a meaningful way to "listen" to journal posts that communicated back to the writer. Facebook's "like" button tries to address the desire, i think, but doesn't meet it.

The "like" button is pretty cool, but the hypothetical LJ button would be similar to that phrase in bambara, the language of Mali, along the lines of "I see you" ["I ni che"].

I know that sense of, "I see you," and that is exactly what i hope and wish one could communicate through words. I think it's easy to communicate that through eye contact, a touch, a shared drink or meal. But when I write, how to show that i see you in your words? I reference what you write -- and next thing you know the advice has slipped out.

I like "I see you" better than "HUG" though: in person i am very awkward with hugs!
