Monday we had fewer Halloween visitors than our usual number. We did not keep a meticulous count, but the total was closer to 30 rather than 60. My favorite candy-loving visitor was the fellow roughly a year old whose parents carried him in their arms. He was dressed as a skunk. His parents also dressed up for Halloween, and appeared to be having the time of their lives. I saw as many princess costumes as usual, but perhaps fewer pirates and Star Wars characters. Each child was polite, and none grabbed at the candy stock. Several of our neighbors decorate their homes assiduously for the holiday, making our home a bit of a plain Jane four wall flower. For yet another year, I resisted eating any candy.

Late Tuesday afternoon I returned to my periodontist. He said things looked good. He advised that I could return to eating normal foods, so long as they were chewed on the other side of my mouth. I am to return in four weeks. In the meantime, I was provided with the tiniest brush known to me to do specialized brush work on the affected area.

We watched the television show Ringer last night, which seems to be finding its voice as updated B movie noir stopping on the outskirts of camp. I also took Beatrice for a walk around the pond, and watched a good bit of the fine classic movie 'The Big Sleep'. Humphrey Bogart was a fine actor and a great chess player, but I focused a good bit last night on Lauren Bacall, for some reason.

A cold front is coming, which brings out the theatricality in the ads for the local newscast. "Snow may be coming to some of you", which translates to "those of you in the cold, furthest reaches of the Texas panhandle, who can barely pick up our broadcast, may get a flurry". On the other hand, the panhandle already got a few inches of snow last week. Snow in November is much more unlikely down our way--at least until late December or January. Sometimes, though, surprises happen--this year I'd be in favor due to the drought.
November 1 we went to Stage 3 drought conditions, which means less lawn watering and the like. I hope the rains come back soon.

This Halloween was my first in twenty years to be living in a place with a front door accessible to costumed children. I was rather excited about it, so I sat just inside with a bowl of candy and a stack of papers that I was grading. Twenty or so kids showed up, but because of rain there were probably fewer than would have been here, otherwise.

I wish I'd gotten candy this year so I could say which costumes were popular around here! The only person who said "Trick or Treat!" to me this time was a housemate knocking on my door. For some reason, she didn't take any of the pomegranate seeds I offered her.

I gave out many of the usual suspects: tiny versions of Snickers, Mars, Snickers, and Twix.
