freight train with clouds

Today we had our 70th day over 100 degrees--a new record. The usual Dallas Summer has 18 such days, so this one has been a bit hot. A cold front is predicted this weekend. I ate turkey and vegetables for lunch. I thought about a hypothetical novel, in which everyone but the hero or heroine has magical powers.

I'd rather be hot than cold, but such a long stretch of over 100 temps sound monstrous to me. Are fatalities occurring on account of this unusual heat, e.g., amongst the elderly who may not have air conditioning and may not be aware that they're slipping into a dangerous state?

Though we're lucky here that almost everyone has air conditioning, Dallas County has had 16 deaths so far.

Fortunately, this week appears to likely be a last hurrah.
Yet the drought that has accompanied it may last into next year.

Ha! I like the premise of your hypothetical novel. It's the rebel in you, right - but what a refreshing change of the multitude of commercial fiction on the shelves these days. I say do it - or tell me you're not and i will! ;-)

wow, in san francisco where i live now, i wouldn't be suprised if it's our 70th day under 79 degrees. i grew up in los angeles so i know about heat at length, but that's quite a long time at a high temp.

It's a sufficiently fun premise that 2 or 3 novels could result. So feel free to give it a go!

It's a bit hot for us. This is the 11th year since I moved back to Texas, and the Summer 11 years ago was close to this hot. It makes me believe in sunspot cycles.
