A pleasant surprise arrived in the mail today.
Some time ago, I had been asked to be a seminar speaker an arcane aspect of insurance law. I drew up a seminar paper and went down to Orange County and presented my little talk. After the talk, I was asked if my presentation might be converted into a chapter of a book. I agreed, and thought very little more about it.

Today's mail brought to me a hardcover tome called by the suitably arcane title: "Viatical Litigation: Principles and Practice". I see that my chapter is now "Part I: the Viatical Legal Frontier", by [Gurdonark]. I must admit that there's something solidly tangible about this, even as I re-read the article to see whether there are any editing or printing errors. But I checked at amazon.com, and it is not yet posted there for sale. I'm amused at myself--but the hardcover book in my hand is not as worthy a proof of publication as a solid Amazon.com listing will be. Still, it's always nice to be published, even if it is a publication in a small press book about the law applicable to terminally ill people who sell their life insurance benefits at a discount before they die.

Hey, maybe I'll get to catalog that book someday soon! We work for several firms with insurance practices. Unfortunately, though, we don't see the ACTUAL books... we work from photocopies of the title pages, versos, etc. I'm sure the title will ring a bell if I see it... Especially with a word like "viatical"...

Nothing is quite as fascinating as a tome on insurance.

Viatical is a subspecies of a subspecies of a subspecies....it'll be interesting to see if you get to catalog it.

Congrats!! You are already a published author, however. Your chess poems have sold on EBay, which is at least as real as Amazon! :)

Thanks. The chess poems have sold quite well, actually, altho they stopped auctioning well in mid-summer, so I am waiting until xmas shopping resumes in September to auction any more.

The poems cost a fair bit less, too! I see from the promo material that the book lists at 300 or so. Wow!

Woo Hoo!

I'll bet you'll actually get royalty checks in the amount of...oh maybe... $10! Excellent. Not earth-shaking perhaps but very....tangible.

I don't plan to make any money on this one. It's just a consumer issue, really.
