on free time
Nov. 14th, 2012 07:25 amThe news is full of generals who, in their free time, sent tens of thousands of pages of lurid e-mails to folks other than their spouses. The whole situation feels a bit like someone gave the media a lot of fish in a barrel and made the fishing too easy. I am not surprised that the generals have these imperfections, being mere humans after all. Yet the whole thing helps me realize that, on balance, taking photos of bluebirds is a less risky pastime. I was watching once more the film "Almost Famous", and thinking about the intoxicating allure of some kinds of celebrity and power.
