Earlier this week I learned about a man I knew through work, who died, unexpectedly, of a heart attack, in his sixties. I knew him as an affable fellow, who knew his field of expertise well and pursued it with a quiet, friendly way about him. When I heard he had died, I felt a little more mortal, even though our ages were separated by some goodish bit of distance.

Today Apple Computers founder Steve Jobs passed away, at a mere 56. I thought this was sad, though I knew he had been fighting illness for years. On the other end of the spectrum of worry, the news is filled with stories of a Kansas City 10 month old, abducted from her crib.

I spent part of this evening running searches through Google books, hunting free books about kindness.
