new quads amid the blooms
May. 9th, 2005 09:41 pmThe daylily flowers in our front garden bed continue to bloom a vibrant yellow, and one last Tropicana rose hovers nearby, a bit splashy. I do not consider myself a rose person, although I do enjoy rows of them in botanical gardens, but I make an exception for Tropicana roses.
At the end of the workday, I got an e mail from the local public library. The message advised me that I can use the new library's meeting room to hold a chess tournament in August. This permits me to run a low-cost tournament right here in Allen, which pleases me. The kind woman at the library took my deposit for the room this evening. I just e-mailed off a tournament advertisement to the USCF for inclusion in Chess Life. As the charge is by the line, I did not use the faux flair I have used in past tournaments, eschewing titles involving the words "kaleidoscope" or "kazoo" and just going with the simple "Allen Quads". I also went with an "action" time control, in which each player gets a full half an hour to make all her or her moves. I hope to publicize this event and get better attendance, but the cost savings will make even a micro-tournament work well.
During our walk this evening, we saw two mallards on Glendover Pond. We watched the very good PBS special about the Carter family, although, predictably, the special featured more soap opera and less autoharp than I prefer. We had a wonderful dinner of garlic shrimp which my wife obtained from a "healthy eating" cookbook. I learned yesterday that I will be rescheduling my visit to Arkansas this weekend, which inclines me to play in a chess tournament instead. I found my cell phone charging cord.
