I maintain a Dreamwidth Account in case LiveJournal ever goes out of business. I saw a post on LiveJournal that someone was concerned that the servers were now in Russia. I had assumed they had been in Russia for some time, and further assume, without knowing the facts, that it is cheaper to run servers in Russia than in the U.S. or Canada. I can understand why folks who post lots of private content on a "friends only" basis might be concerned, though my own view is that "friends only" posting probably runs more risk from hackers than from security services and that the risk for the average "friends only" post is minimal.
Nonetheless, I maintain a space on Dreamwidth in case LJ ever goes down for the count. But perhaps I should post on Dreamwidth from time to time anyway. We'll see.

As far as departing LJ, I'm not sure what i think about the big-data/metrics argument, which i read just moments before reading your post. I'm not concerned about security services or hackers, myself.
