I picked up one of those Ross MacDonald Lew Archer mysteries at the used bookstore. The detective is doing a background check on a bohemian artist.
Interesting narrative about Ajijic near Guadalajara--the expatriate avant garde descriptions could almost come from a travel magazine, not a novel of decades ago. I love Mexico, but I think I'll stick to the Dallas suburbs.

I like the conventions of the hard-boiled detective novel, which is a recently acquired taste. I used to only like English puzzle novels.
It's funny,though, that way that a mystery's
"solution thread" runs subconsciously through one's head once one has read a few, pointing out murderers and discarding red herrings with ease.
