We waited until 8:30 to take our walk with Beatrice in the park. Things had cooled a bit by then. In the near-dark, we saw a small owl sitting on a fence. I could not make out the species--it was quite small. Perhaps the owl was an immature barred owl. Then we saw the long, swooping form of a Common Nighthawk hawking for insects over the pond. In the distance, we saw lightning from a super-cell miles away.It flashed and flashed. Later we heard on the news it was way out near Paris, Texas. That seems like a long way away to me to still be visible.

That's something I've always liked about Texas, that visibility is so far. I remember when my family was driving through TX one summer on the way to CO to visit relatives. We were approaching Amarillo, where a terrible storm was taking place, and we could see it from miles (I think? that certainly is what it felt like) away; it was menacing as we finally approached it.

I lived in Amarillo from age 1 to age 3. I love that part of the Panhandle, where one can literally see storms for dozens of miles in the distance. This is also canyon country--instead of mountains relieving the flatness, huge canyons
appear as if from nowhere and look absolutely lovely.

My part of Texas is not that flat, but much flatter than
Georgia or Massachusetts.
