at the flea market: "daddy, is it okay to pretend"?
"yes, son, it's okay".
at the hiking trail: "excuse me, sir, do you have a cell phone. my friend is over yonder on the other side of the field, and I found the cows we were looking for"

It's funny, Bianca and I were discussing the pervasiveness of cell phones this afternoon. I didn't say anything about it then, but I think of them as just another way for some people to become disconnected with themselves. Sometimes I wish I had one when I go on long car trips, though....

What is yourself but what you are connected to?

I used to make it a point

I used to refuse to carry my cell. Then I
refused to use it when I was in town, reserving it for trips. Now I'm about to begin carrying it all the time. If I were a farmer, it might make sense. As it is, though, it's just another string by which I can be summoned.

I think it's quite easy to use a cell phone to distract yourself from your brain's constant dialog. On my commute to New York every day you can pick out the people who spend their whole time talking on their handy phones, day after day. It's no slight against them, as it's their choice and right, but I can't help but feel it's another sort of escapism.

I wish I had a cell phone and yet I don't want one. It's a gadget and I love gadgets. But then there's another monthly expense. But they're cool. But then there will just be another distraction. I carry one occasionally when I on-call and it's nice to call home and say "I'll be late dear - the snow has really snarled traffic." But that's about the extent of my use of one.
