this reminds me of James McMurtry's songs, and my own childhood!
both my son and i have shingles(courtesy of childhood measles).
in my case, they didn't get all the kids their Dip-Tet when they
were in diapers. my son had all his immunizations, but had measles
so bad we were tempted to call him 'spot'.

i think that any forthcoming Gurdonark CDs should definitely
feature some of your dad's cannons firing, too!
